Tips for Conservative Printing

On this page, you can find information on techniques to reduce your printed page count in the Grainger Computer Labs.  These are all very simple things to do and only require a little bit of forethought to save considerable money and wear and tear on the printers.

Printing Only What You Need

Although it does not seem like it, printing is expensive.  1000 printed pages costs about $50!  Therefore, it is a good idea to only print what is necessary for class.  It is a good idea to use discretion when printing items that your Professor places on a class website for your personal consumption or other articles & documents that are not required for class.  If at all possible, save electronic copies of these files to your network space (the My Documents folder or the Desktop), a USB drive, A Zip Disk, or a CD.  That way you can review them at your leisure without having to carry around large amounts of paper.  If it is something that needs to be printed, it may be a good idea to us N-Page printing (described below) to get at least 4 pages per sheet of paper.

Don't Print Everything All At Once

While it may be tempting to print everything on your Professor's website at the start of the semester, it is a better idea to wait until after the first day of class and ask your professor what is needed and what is for personal use.  Not everything an instructor makes available is material you are responsible for.

N-Up Printing

Another excellent way to conserve paper is by using the N-Up Printing option.  This feature allows you to print multiple pages onto one piece of paper by shrinking each page.
If you use duplex mode with N-Up  you could print 16 pages onto one piece of paper!

You can access Printing Options/Properties by using File -> Print instead of the print button/icon.

It's possible to direct your printouts to a different tray.  Under the Paper tab along the top of the Printer Properties page is the Paper settings page.  Click on the drop-down arrow under the heading Output to change the output tray.

Also located under Paper settings, is the Landscape printing option.  This works nicely when you're trying to print wider pages, like diagrams.

Printer Friendly WebPages

When printing WebPages, it always a good idea to look for the "Printer Friendly Webpage" or the "Printer Friendly Version" link usually located at the bottom of an article.  This will take you to a version of the article that or webpage that does not include frames or graphics.  Using the printer friendly version generally results in lower page counts and toner usage.

Printing PowerPoint Slides

When printing PowerPoint slides, there is a "Print What:" option at the lower left of the printing option window. The default selection is "Slides," if you print this way it will print each page in separated sheet. To print 3 slides per page, or any other configuration (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 slides/page), change this option to "Handouts." This will then allow you to change the handouts configuration on the right.
